Brunel, Thomas.
Recruitment - the number of young fishes that integrate each year the exploitable stock¿ has a central importance for stock dynamics. The high temporal variability in recruitment is a result of the environmental influence on survival during early life stages. Understanding the determinism of the influence of environment on recruitment remains one of the most important question in fisheries ecology. The present work aimed at answering some general questions about the influence of environment on fish recruitment using a macroecological approach. The study focused on the exploited fish populations of the Northeastern Atlantic. The first chapter of the thesis makes a review of the different methods used to estimate recruitment, compares recruitment estimates...

Contamination of the Bay of Biscay by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) following the T/V "Erika" oil spill ArchiMer
Tronczynski, Jacek; Munschy, Catherine; Moisan, Karine; Guiot, Nadege; Truquet, Isabelle; Olivier, Nathalie; Men, Sophie; Furaut, Audrey.
An investigation was carried out into the PAH chemical contamination resulting from the "Erika" tanker fuel spillage of December 1999 along the French coast of the Bay of Biscay. A qualitative and quantitative assessment was conducted of this contamination in water, suspended particulate matter, sediments, and in intertidal molluscs. The chemical composition of PAHs in pre-spill and post-spill samples was determined and used to distinguish the "Erika's" fuel as the source of PAHs in the coastal environment of the Bay of Biscay. Changes in concentrations of PAHs were also assessed. The GC-MS analysis made it possible to identify and quantify parent unsubstituted PAHs, alkyl-substituted PAHs (C-PAH) and sulfur heterocycle unsubstituted and alkyl substituted...

Durieux, Eric.
Coastal areas, such as shallow water bays and estuaries, serve as nurseries for juveniles of many marine fishes and especially flatfishes. Parasites play an important role in these marine ecosystems, but it remains poorly studied. Little attention has been paid to parasitism as a potential factor of variation in flatfish juveniles biological performances in these habitats. Sole juveniles, Solea solea (Pleuronectiformes, Soleidae), that is a species of primary importance for fisheries, are infected by digenean metacercariae. Thus, the aims of this PhD thesis were: i) to determine the spatio-temporal dynamics of the digenean metacercariae infection of 0-group sole juveniles at different scales; ii) to estimate the effects of this infection at different...

Guichet, Roger.
European hake is one of the most important commercial species of the North East Atlantic. Its biology is quite well known in spite of age reading problems. This report provides a review of the state of knowledge based on updated data, specially for parameters used in the working groups in charge of stocks assessments. The fisheries for hake are essentially sequential. In recent years fishing mortalities have been moderate and the over exploitation of the stocks is due to the excessive catches of young fish and to the fishing pattern of some fleets. The result of this inappropriate exploitation pattern is dangerous with a decrease of the spawning stock biomass and recrutrnent for the two stocks.

Gondeaux, Evelyne; Durand, Jean-louis; Flores, Domingo.

Utility of mixed effects models to inform the stock structure of whiting in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Barrios, Alexander; Ernande, Bruno; Mahe, Kelig; Trenkel, Verena; Rochet, Marie-joelle.
Stock structure of whiting (Merlangius merlangus) in the North East Atlantic is unclear. This study uses mixed effects models to analyse growth variability as a way to investigate stock identification. Growth trajectories for 634 individuals and length-at-age data for 78,686 individuals were analysed for spatial coherence and temporal synchrony in the parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth model. Growth was found to differ among most ICES divisions, and temporal fluctuations were poorly synchronized between areas. This study illustrates how growth analyses can contribute to stock identification, in addition to other data.
